OUR MISSION

To empower individuals with disabilities by equipping them with skills, confidence, and opportunities to reclaim their dignity, realize their value, and actively participate in their personal development—fostering self-reliance and resilience.

REFUGEE-LED

Hope for People with Disability (HPD) is a community-based organization founded in the Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement, Kamwenge District, Uganda.

We are committed to promoting inclusivity, dignity, and empowerment for persons with disabilities. HPD is officially registered at the district level under registration number 1455/24, and operates under a Memorandum of Understanding with the Office of the Prime Minister, granting us legal authority to serve communities across Uganda.

Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement in Southwestern Uganda houses nearly 70,000 refugees. Established in 1964 for Rwandan refugees, it closed in 1995 and reopened in 2012 for Congolese fleeing the M23 rebellion.

Our members arrived in Uganda, fleeing the devastating conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their passion for social justice deepened, witnessing firsthand the discrimination faced by People With Disabilities (PWD). They have a clear vision: to create a place where people with disabilities, particularly refugees, can find hope and a community.

ACTIVITIES

We envision a world where persons with disabilities are valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential—living independently and contributing meaningfully to their communities.

Agriculture

We promote inclusive agricultural practices by supporting persons with disabilities in vegetable cultivation. Through our demonstration garden, participants learn improved agronomic techniques that enhance food security and income generation.

Vocational Skills Trainings

We offer hands-on training in sandal making, belt crafting, keyholder production, and carpentry. These activities utilize locally available materials, including animal by-products. For services beyond our scope, we collaborate with partner organizations to ensure continuity of support.

Psychosocial Support

We foster mental well-being and social inclusion through recreational activities such as football, volleyball, and other group games. These engagements help reduce isolation, anxiety, and depression. We also conduct home visits for individuals with mobility challenges—offering companionship, storytelling, and emotional support to promote integration and dignity.

Advocacy

Our advocacy efforts focus on the most marginalized groups within refugee communities—particularly children with disabilities and women. We champion their rights, amplify their voices, and work to dismantle barriers to inclusion and protection.

Education

We have established a Language Learning Centre to promote literacy and communication skills among persons with disabilities. While distance and mobility limitations pose challenges, we are exploring adaptive solutions including assistive tools and community-based outreach to ensure equitable access to education.
